Russell Carpenter is our head brewer, resident scientist, and self-described beer geek. In addition to being a BJCP Certified Beer judge, he has both a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. After home brewing for the better part of the last decade in Alabama, New York, Oregon, and most recently Australia, he realized that his passion for brewing far exceeded his desire to conduct laboratory research and decided to make a career change. After moving to New Hampshire in April 2015 he sent an email to Josh Henry and Nate Sephton at 7th Settlement Brewery that resulted in an opportunity to volunteer at their brewpub in Dover, NH. After several months of working together, Josh and Nate were convinced that Russell was an ideal candidate for head brewer in Acton. Russell jumped at the opportunity to realize his dream and, helped build 7th Brewing Co. at True West from the ground up. Nine months later he started creating delicious brews at at True West in Acton!
Russell brings his passion for beer and brewing science to True West and uses his analytical background to create new and exciting brews. He is constantly researching beer styles, new ingredients, and different techniques to produce beer of the highest quality for our customers. When he isn’t brewing large batches of beer on our 10 barrel brewhouse, you can find him continuing to experiment at home with new yeast strains, hops, and malts. He is also excited to gain a new brewing buddy in April 2016 when he becomes a new father. Russell is incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to beer and brewing, so please stop by and say hello, and if you catch him at the right time, you may just get an earful of beer trivia and a behind the scenes tour of how he creates your tasty beverages.
